Tolmie - House Lift

The Tolmie house lift was born out of the idea of multi-generational living. The family wanted the comforts of living together, taking an unusable basement into a legal suite for maintaining independence and privacy. This 1909 character home was a complex undertaking to bring the house to seismic code, creating a new mechanical room to service the house, and provide a legal suite for the inlaws. The house was converted from Hydro to natural gas and included in-floor heating throughout the new polished concreate basement slab and main floors. In keeping with the era of the house with exceptionally high ceilings, the new basement was raised to 9.5’ with full windows to bring natural light and a spacious feeling into this basement. All the doors throughout the house were custom sized to 7’ to accommodate the tall homeowners.
